Primary Purpose:

Counsel students to fully develop each student’s academic, career, personal, and social abilities and address the needs of special populations. Facilitate a successful transition of high school students to college or the workforce.

 

 

Qualifications:

 

Education/Certification:

Bachelor’s Degree

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development

Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Ability to instruct students and manage behavior

Skilled in working with computer tools, software, email and Internet

 

Experience:

One year experience working with children

 

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

Guidance

  1. Implement college readiness programs to prepare underachieving students for college.
  2. Implement programs that encourage students towards advanced academic opportunities.
  3. Implement Career Cruising by working with counselors to ensure all high school students have accounts.
  4. Implement programs that align the curriculum for grades 6 through 12 with postsecondary curriculum.
  5. Lead group sessions and parent nights on college-related issues, such as writing essays, getting recommendations, preparing for tests, applying for financial aid, and planning for careers.
  6. Host a career fair with representatives from a variety of educational institutions: local community colleges, technical schools, large public universities and smaller private liberal arts colleges.
  7. Provide services to assist special population students transition from high school to post-secondary college/training.
  8. Implement the Achieve Texas College and Career Initiative.

 

 

Consultation

  1. Provides career advisement for students, faculty, and staff by providing personal interest assessments, career identification and planning, job readiness assessment, job coaching and job search training through individual appointments and walk in sessions.
  2. Work with school and community personnel to bring together resources for students.
  3. Implement strategies for promoting opportunities for CTE students to earn postsecondary credit and encourage student completion of college degrees and/or postsecondary certificates.
  4. Maintain a communication system that effectively collects and disseminates information to other professionals as appropriate.
  5. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with other school professionals and representatives of community resources.

 

Assessment

  1. Participate in the planning and/or evaluation of college-related and career-related testing.
  2. Interpret appropriate tests and appraisal results and communicate to school personnel, students, and parents.
  3. Maintain the confidentiality of student assessment.

 

Program Management

  1. Support underachieving students through success in college and career-related preparatory classes.
  2. Maintain career services office and Internet web page with current resources.
  3. Develop, organize and promote career-related events on campus and in the community.

 

Administration

  1. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rules, and board policies.
  2. Comply with all district and campus regulations.
  3. Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
  4. Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents.

 

Professional

  1. Adhere to the ethical and legal standards and model behavior that is professional and responsible.
  2. Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.
  3. Responsible for properly maintaining district records, adhering to all policies set forth by the district for records management and retention.
  4. Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

Maintain emotional control under stress. Work with continuous interruptions. Moderate climbing, stretching, and frequent lifting of books, boxes and audio/visual equipment. Moderate standing, stooping, and bending. Prolonged use of computer. Work outside of the normal work week.
