Primary Purpose:

 

Help plan and monitor bus drivers’ ability to operate and service district vehicles. Ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned route. Operate a school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from school or other designated locations.

 

Qualifications:

 

Education/Certification:

Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class B or Class A with Passenger and School Bus Driver Endorsements)

Texas School Bus Driver Certification

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Must be 18 years of age

Ability to pass alcohol and drug test

Ability to complete required bus driver safety training

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions

Ability to communicate effectively

Knowledge of student discipline procedures

Ability to manage student behavior

Ability to pass alcohol and drug test

Ability to pass bus driver physical exam

Ability to operate bus safely

 

Experience:

Two years bus driving experience

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

Vehicle Operation

  1. Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules. Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities.
  2. Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs.
  3. Take a different bus to a bus driver when his/her bus breaks down.
  4. Monitor driving performance and counsel bus drivers when necessary.
  5. Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.
  6. Assist bus drivers with maintenance when necessary.
  7. Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failure. Complete required reports.
  8. Keep record of bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported.

Student Management

  1. Supervise students as they board and leave bus and cross street.
  2. Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior while on bus.
  3. Maintain discipline and report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.
  4. Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.
  5. Take student discipline referrals from assigned drivers to school principals.

Safety

  1. Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  2. Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflectors.
  3. Inspect bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.
  4. Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.
  5. Report any hazardous conditions along bus route.
  6. Install snow chains during inclement weather.
  7. Supervise bus departures and loading areas at assigned school.
  8. Train new bus drivers prior to receiving their safety certification.

Routes and Schedules

  1. Help plan and maintain bus routes.
  2. Advise and monitor bus drivers on following routes and schedules.
  3. Maintain records of assigned bus routes and assist bus drivers in setting up bus route folders.

Other

  1. Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office.
  2. Work irregular hours as needed.
  3. Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification status.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 

Monitor the work of assigned bus drivers.

 

Equipment Used:

 

School bus, safety equipment (flares, reflective signs), fire extinguisher.

 

Working Conditions:

 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control under stress. Continual sitting, reaching, and repetitive hand and arm motions. Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes.
